Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order?

Please contact us with what you're looking for, and for which date you'll need it, and we can start from there.  We will let you know before anything if your event date is available. When placing an order, please have an idea of how big of a cake you need, or how many people you would like to feed, as well as the sort of style or design you have in mind. Tell us your theme, colors, and any specific design ideas you have. Please share whatever pictures you may have that will help give us a better idea of what you're looking for. It will also help to know your budget so we can design a cake to fit your needs.

How should I contact you?

E-mail is our primary mode of communication since it is easiest to give clients ideas through sketches, pictures, and other attachments. E-mail also allows us to keep track of every detail we have discussed and every interaction we've had, which helps a lot when it comes down to the creation process. At your request, we can go over any additional details by phone, but please e-mail Nicole before anything at coley@cakesbycoley.com. Please allow up to 24 hours for a response [sometimes a bit longer on weekends]. You may also use the "Contact Us" Form on our website to submit an inquiry.

How much do your cakes cost?

It's hard to provide a price estimate until we know exactly what you are looking for.  There is no "set" price list, and all of the cakes are priced on an individual basis.  Pricing starts at about $140 for all custom cakes and prices are derived from a variety of factors: complexity of design, size and labor required are the main factors that determine price.  Sculpted/ 3D cakes are obviously more work than MOST tiered cakes, so a sculpted cake for 50 people would no doubt be more expensive than a regular 2- tiered cake for 50 people. Keep in mind though, since labor is the biggest factor, a sculpted cake for 20 people might not be any less expensive than a sculpted cake for 40 people, as the same amount of labor is required for both. It is worth noting that our prices are very reasonable when compared to other cake artists, especially considering the quality of work that you'll be receiving [and if you aren't sure, please price around!].  With all that being said, we will be more than happy to work with you and come up with a design that will fit your budget to the best of our ability. Please check out our Pricing Guide under the "Info" tab to get a general idea of the price range a cake may fall within based on size and design.

How far in advance should I place my order?

We suggest placing your order 4-6 weeks prior to your event date.  Please contact us as early as possible to ensure availability. Please also note, no date is reserved until a deposit of 30% or more is placed. Although we typically book up about a month in advance, there are certainly instances when we can create last minute cakes, so please get in touch with us.

Yes, we will deliver your cake to anywhere you request. We are based in Brooklyn, NY but deliver all over NY and NJ. A reasonable delivery fee is applied to cover tolls, mileage and travel time [typically anywhere from $30 to $80].

What is fondant? I've heard mixed things about it...

All of our cakes are covered in fondant, which is a sugar dough made from powdered sugar, gelatin, vanilla, and other sugary ingredients. The fondant is rolled out thinly and is laid over our buttercreamed cakes. There are several reasons why we prefer to work with fondant on our cakes: We love the flawless, porcelain finish it gives to the exterior of the cakes. It also seals the cake and helps to keep it very moist on the inside. It also adds strength to the exterior of the cake in a way that makes it easier to handle, transport, and most importantly, decorate. Many of the decorations you see are sculpted or cut out of fondant and can be held in place very firmly even under stressful transportation or weather conditions. At the time the cakes are served, the fondant can be cut with the cake and easily removed by anyone not wishing to eat it [even though it is delicious!]. For those of you who think you don't like fondant, we encourage you to please try ours. We use the highest quality, tastiest vanilla fondant on the market, that may pleasantly surprise you if you have had “bad” fondant before... and trust me, we have tried them all!
